Fall Lawn & Garden Care
As cooler temperatures finally arrive, don’t neglect a few lawn care projects this fall that can really make a difference next spring.
First, spread a final round of fertilizer to prepare the grass for winter. This will help build stronger roots before cold weather, and provide a thicker turf in the spring.
Fall is also an ideal time to plant trees and large shrubs, so the roots have a chance to take hold without the harsh summer heat. Be sure to water new trees regularly for 2-3 months through the fall and early winter. This may require hand watering, since the tree will need more water than the dormant lawn.
Finally, prepare flower beds for early spring color by planting bulbs this fall. Prepare the soil well with peat moss or a slow release fertilizer, and ensure it is well drained to prevent the bulbs from rotting.
